Chimp Eden Volunteer Project

The Chimp Eden volunteer project has been started in aid to educate people on conservation of these endangered species and to be able to go back home and give the message to their family, friends and children.

The volunteer program runs every month, starting every first and third Monday of the month. Volunteers therefore have to arrive at Chimp Eden the Saturday or Sunday before the program starts.

The minimum stay is one week. During that first week lectures are held everyday. The lectures include the introduction to Chimp Eden, introduction to primates and the history of chimpanzees, chimpanzee feeding habits and dietary requirements, chimpanzee behaviour, sustainable tourism and environmental education, introduction to primates in captivity and sanctuary management.

After the morning lectures there are chimpanzee introductions so you can meet the heroes of the sanctuary. After all the introductions, chimp observations start. The chimp observations are not only for us to conduct an on going study of the animals’ improvement, but also for the volunteer to learn chimpanzee behaviour and each animal individually.

Other duties for the volunteers include:
Filling of water in the enclosures
Filling of ‘tree feeders’ in the mornings with fruit
Cleaning of the enclosures in the afternoon
Removing of invasive plant species in enclosures
  Spraying herbicide
  Fence maintenance
Searching and removing of snares on the farm (anti-poaching)
Helping any of the other staff with daily tasks

After the weeks work volunteers have half day off on Saturdays and full day on Sundays. On these days volunteers can arrange activities such as going to Kruger National Park.

1.  Wendy World Package

This is the most popular and cost efficient option. It is 5 small wooden houses 500m from the first chimp enclosure. Each “Wendy” has a bed and cupboard in. If more than 5 volunteers apply for the same period then two persons will share a “Wendy”. The volunteers at Wendy World share a communal bathroom and living area which is clean regularly. All meals are made at the restaurant for the volunteers to be picked up at certain times.

This option includes:
  Accommodation
Three meals daily (including one coffee/tea/juice per meal)
  Volunteer course study material
  Town trip once a week
  Laundry service

Price: $ 815 (USD)  per person per week
