Observation
Notes
19 July 2008 - Posted by Jessica Ney (Chimp Observer) Juvenile enclosure – This camp was also quiet. Joao found the sun as he exited the night rooms and was able to warm up straight away. Cozy has become very calm lately and likes to sit and eat his breakfast in peace rather than displaying. The infants chased one another through the trees after breakfast.19 July 2008 - Posted by Jessica Ney (Chimp Observer) Adult enclosure – There were no introductions this morning so the chimps were all calm. The climate is also warm and sunny, so the adults mainly relaxed in the sun. Amadeus is still the alpha and Nikki is groveling for recognition. The females are content with the new power situation.18 July 2008 - Posted by Jessica Ney (Chimp Observer) Juvenile enclosure – Zac and Cozy were chasing each other around the night rooms this morning. Cozy’s social behaviour has improved so that he no longer just runs away from Zac but retaliates. He also ran to Joao for reassurance. Later, Zac and Cozy reconciled and gave one another a hug.18 July 2008 - Posted by Jessica Ney (Chimp Observer) Adult enclosure – Abu invited Jinga to mate this morning. This is the first time any other male apart from Nikki has shown interest in mating with Jinga. However, as Jinga presented right in front of Abu, Nikki jumped on top for a threesome. Unfortunately for Abu, it was all over before it began.17 July 2008 - Posted by Jessica Ney (Chimp Observer) Juvenile enclosure – Zac attacked Thomas today for taking his food. Thomas, not easily put off, chased after Zac screaming. Zac eventually let Thomas embrace him. Even Joao rushed over and Thomas was allowed to embrace the old male as well, which calmed him down. Young Thomas is very bold for his size17 July 2008 - Posted by Jessica Ney (Chimp Observer) Adult enclosure – Josephine met Guida today and they embraced. Then Josephine showed her dominance by taking Guida’s banana. Although Guida protested by attacking Josephine, it was to no avail. When Amadeus displayed today, Abu became scared and actually grabbed on to Nikki for support.16 July 2008 - Posted by Jessica Ney (Chimp Observer) Juvenile enclosure – Sampa and Toni were introduced to the juvenile group again today. Sampa is slowly learning to defend herself and is more relaxed. When Zeena slapped her, Sampa actually slapped her back this time. Later on, she was calmly feeding although the others were still around.16 July 2008 - Posted by Jessica Ney (Chimp Observer) Adult enclosure – Today Josephine was introduced to Jinga. To our surprise, there was no reaction of either chimp. They didn’t fight or groom or even vocalise. Jinga responded to Josephine once when she went to beg for some food but all in all she was more concerned with rejoining the group outside.15 July 2008 - Posted by Jessica Ney (Chimp Observer) Juvenile enclosure – Sampa and Toni were introduced to the juvenile group again this morning. It was a lot quieter than before. However, Sampa is still not integrating properly. She was charged by Joao and Zac. Cozy stayed out of the way. Toni is fine and interacted with some of the other infants.15 July 2008 - Posted by Jessica Ney (Chimp Observer) Adult enclosure – Josephine was introduced to Nikki for the first time today. Though he charged her, there was not a lot of slapping from his side. She slapped him herself a few times though, which left him baffled. He tried to play with her later and put on his biggest play-face but she wouldn’t have it.14 July 2008 - Posted by Jessica Ney (Chimp Observer) Juvenile enclosure – When Zac was having his breakfast this morning, he shared his pawpaw with little Charlie. Zac held the fruit and Charlie ate out of his hand. Ten minutes later, Zee came along and took Zac’s last orange straight out of his hand. He has become such a great big brother for the infants.14 July 2008 - Posted by Jessica Ney (Chimp Observer) Adult enclosure – Josephine and Mimi are at war through the bars. Mimi is a bully and likes to keep the other females in check. Josephine, however, will not be bullied and knows to stand up for herself. As Josephine is a large female, Mimi might get a surprise when we start the introductions.13 July 2008 - Posted by Jessica Ney (Chimp Observer) Juvenile enclosure – Thomas is growing fast. He now shows more respect towards Joao and Zac so they are more tolerant of him. He often follows one of the males around, mimicking them in order to learn how to be a male chimp. He has even learnt how to make kissy noises to beg for food in the same way Zac does.13 July 2008 - Posted by Jessica Ney (Chimp Observer) Adult enclosure – The adults were miserable the whole day due to cold weather and no sun. After breakfast, they came back to sit in front of the night rooms, hoping to maybe be let back inside again. They were quiet the entire day, the females often keeping close to the males for warmth. 12 July 2008 - Posted by Jessica Ney (Chimp Observer) Juvenile enclosure – Zee and Charlie are now both in wonderland every morning. Though it used to be just Zee clowning around, Charlie now joins in and does something that looks a lot like “yoga for chimps”. It is all centred around Zee’s forest, where they chase one another and perform little dances.12 July 2008 - Posted by Jessica Ney (Chimp Observer) Adult enclosure – We have a new alpha male – Amadeus. While Amadeus, Nikki and the females spend most of the day together, Abu sits by himself. The power struggle for alpha position appears to be over and Amadeus has won. Abu is not an entire outcast though. The females visit him and even let him mate.11 July 2008 - Posted by Jessica Ney (Chimp Observer) Juvenile enclosure – Joao was unhappy about the weather situation today. It was cold and overcast, not one ray of sun shone through. He was in a bad mood the entire day and did not have a lot of patience with the youngsters. The infants have luckily learnt when to stay away from the old man.11 July 2008 - Posted by Jessica Ney (Chimp Observer) Adult enclosure – Jinga has come into oestrus for the first time since she has been in the outside enclosure. Her swelling is enormous and she is now picky in terms of who she will mate with. Nikki spent a while yesterday, trying to persuade her to mate. When he succeeded, it was only for a short duration.10 July 2008 - Posted by Jessica Ney (Chimp Observer) Juvenile enclosure – Nina and Zeena are currently quarreling over a blanket that they stole from Tony and Sampa. When either of them has it, the other tries to take it away. Cozy is quiet at the moment and staying out of trouble. Zac is getting bigger and bigger and ever more confident. 10 July 2008 - Posted by Jessica Ney (Chimp Observer) Adult enclosure – In my absence, it seems as though there has been a shift in the male hierarchy. Abu behaves quite submissively to Amadeus now but was observed as being dominant over him just last week. They have been quiet, no fights but Amadeus is still making sure that Mimi stays close by.10 July 2008 - Posted by Jessica Ney (Chimp Observer) Dear readers! 02 July 2008 - Posted by Jessica Ney (Chimp Observer) Good morning folks. We let the infants out today without doing any introductions.I am getting ready for the arrival of the chimps from Sudan. The infant camp is busy and all the chimps are well.Zee slept a bit late this morning and was last to come out(late night)Zac has got very energetic in the mornings and displays when he comes out.Joao is happy as there is lots of sunshine.Nina gave Cozy a big hug this morning when she came out, that was great to see.
The adult camp has been very well behaved and all thechimps ate breakfast together this morning.Nikki will still try to mate with any of the females that will allow him to,but then thats typical of a young teenage chimp male.
Tony and Sampa are well and are interacting great with the neighbours.
Josaphine is also getting on well with the rest of the group and it looks good for the nextstep of introductions.
