Message from the Executive
Director
Our newcomer Claudette settled in happily with
old friends Amadeus and Nikki at the Sanctuary
this month. She was relocated from the
Johannesburg Zoo and our sincere thanks go to
the Zoo’s CEO, Dr Stephen van der Spuy, and his
team for such a smooth, professional move.
We are very excited about the premiere of Escape
to Chimp Eden on November 3 and hope the series
will create huge awareness for the plight of
chimpanzees.

Quarantine has been lifted for Martha, Suzie,
Lily as well as our seven youngsters from the
Sudan, and we’re looking forward to seeing them
in their enclosure. We are all still feeling the
loss of Abu, who died of congestive heart
failure on August 1. He was one of the first
chimps to arrive at the Sanctuary, in March
2006, and was alpha male of our first family
group.
Other news is that Sanctuary manager Phillip
Cronje will attend the Pan Sanctuary Alliance
(PASA) Managers’ Workshop in November and I will
be at the Educators’ Workshop in December. I
would like to thank PASA for making these
opportunities available to us.
Finally, as Christmas approaches, please
consider a gift that will help chimpanzees, such
as an Adopt-a-Chimp package (see web site for
details) or a donation in a loved one’s name.
Kind regards,
Sue Slotar
