Sanctuary Update

While JGI Chimpanzee Eden gears up for the next mission – to rescue chimps from the Sudan, Angola and possibly Ghana – back home, Zac, Jinga and the five Sudanese babes are being introduced to their new families and enclosures.

Zac is joining males Cozy and Joao in the enclosure they share with female youngsters, Sally and Zena. The introduction is going extremely well, and by the time you read this, he will be joining this group outdoors every day. Imagine his joy – having spent most of his life chained to a tree and expected to entertain bar-goers, many of whom fed him beer and cigarettes.

Once Zac is completely comfortable, this group will get another boost with the addition of the five Sudanese babies: Nina, Thomas, Zee, Dinka and Charles. Most of these, with an average age of 18 months, have probably not been in adult company for as long as they can remember. Nor have they climbed trees.

In the meantime, Jinga is being introduced to the other enclosure, to re-join Guida and Lica with whom she was in quarantine. Jinga is still very nervous of the alpha male, Abu, so this introduction is taking time.

The third enclosure at JGI Chimpanzee Eden has also now been completed, as has the restaurant and learning centre.
