Swell funds for chimp rescues by adopting a chimp
JGI SA has launched Adopt-a-Chimp, a fundraising programme enabling participants to watch their chimpanzees online, while helping us to rescue abused chimps by swelling the funds available for these missions.
“As well as other benefits, the programme enables subscribers to view the daily activities of their adopted chimps at Chimpanzee Eden via the Web,” says sanctuary MD, Eugene Cussens. “Wireless cameras are an integral part of all the enclosures at the Sanctuary – now that we’ve finally found ways to secure these so that the naturally curious chimps do not destroy them within hours!
“The Web cameras assist us in researching rehabilitation techniques, but also offer you the unrivalled opportunity of seeing your chimpanzee’s behaviour on a daily basis.”
The Adopt-a-chimp programme offers two different options, costing R600 and R2000 per year. Both enable you to view the chimpanzees via the JGI SA Web site. Web cameras constantly follow the chimpanzees. The Web view is selected by an operator who displays images when something interesting is happening in the enclosures.
For those without broadband (viewing over the Web is bandwidth-intensive) both packages also include access to daily pictures of your favourite chimp. The pictures are taken by the research cam and posted daily.
