Food gardens projects in Soweto and Lehae
JGI SA and KDR Sports and Adventure Travel have joined forces to establish two new Roots & Shoots groups in Kliptown, Soweto, and Lehae, south of Johannesburg.
Both areas have unemployed young people with no access to tertiary education. Many are frustrated and may now have some release for their energy.
Our first joint project was a food garden workshop for both groups in August. In spite of the freezing cold, there was enthusiastic response to the workshop presented by Luke Mdluli of Mpumalanga. Delegates were exposed to the concepts of organic gardening, seed propagation, planting and care of seedlings, preparing compost and nutrition. Basic tools, compost, seeds and seedlings were distributed, and both groups have now started community food gardens.
We hope the concept will spread widely within the community so that many others will start and maintain food gardens on their own properties, as well as supporting the community concept.
We want to expand support for these communities and already KDR has presented soccer balls as well as netball poles and balls to the young people.
We need ongoing support for our initiatives and if anyone would like to help, please contact Denis Creighton on
denis@soweto.co.za or 082 9000105, or Sue at Roots & Shoots on
