Inspiring PASA workshop

Sue takes time off to visit the local market

“Inspiring and informative” is how JGI SA’s executive director Sue Slotar describes the Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA) Education Workshop which she attended at the beginning of March in Nairobi, Kenya.

The workshop was devoted to Sanctuary-based education and communication. It covered everything from PASA best practices and achieving the Alliance’s education goals, to preparing education/communication plans as well as the use of human-wildlife conflict resolution techniques to improve community relationships. It also focused on developing leadership, interpretation and media skills, as well as signage theory.

“It included a visit to the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, also in a non-range area and therefore similar to Chimp Eden. The Sanctuary is a profit-making organisation, all employees are paid and profits are ploughed back into the Conservancy in which it’s situated – an ideal model for a sanctuary in Africa.”

The next PASA workshop is the Management Workshop in the US, which sanctuary manager Phillip will attend.

“We are privileged to be PASA members as the body does so much good work,” says Sue. “I would like to express our thanks to PASA for our invitation to the Workshop, and to Barb Cartwright, PASA education coordinator.

”PASA was established in 2000 to promote cooperation and community among the sanctuaries that care for thousands of chimpanzees, gorillas, bonobos and other endangered primates across Africa.
