The highlight so far this year has undoubtedly been the completion of sleeping quarters for our wonderful third enclosure at the Sanctuary. This enabled us to finally move our two existing chimp families into new enclosures, and release our third family group into their home for the first time. Thanks to our unflappable sanctuary manager, Phillip Cronje, all moves proceeded smoothly and our 31 chimps are happily settled in their new homes.
The Sanctuary recently became home to two ex-circus chimps, Charles and Jessica, and we’re also playing temporary host to a group of Rwandan monkeys!
There has never been a better time to visit the Sanctuary, and I would urge you to join one of our tours next time you’re in the Nelspruit vicinity.
Rescue director Eugene Cussons and Phillip are still being followed around by a film crew – and the second series of Escape to Chimp Eden is now showing on Animal Planet in the US. I’d like to take this opportunity to recognise our wonderful US fans and thank you all for your continued help and loyal support. Your contributions really make a difference to our work!
I am sad to report that since our last newsletter Guida, a member of Amadeus’ family, passed away. She had congestive heart failure and her death has left a big gap – not only in our ‘oldest’ chimp family, but also in our hearts.
We’re now looking forward to Dr Jane Goodall’s visit in July.
Kind regards,
