The Johannesburg Zoo, in association with JGI SA and Community Connect, will soon kick off an anti-littering campaign to drive home awareness about the effects of littering on our environment.
The litter collected on just one day from the Zoo will be displayed in a cage for all to see.
“Our objective is to show how much people litter during one day, and to highlight how unsightly it looks,” says Gaby Sidley of Community Collect, which aims to create a culture of volunteering and a sense of responsibility to communities. “If litter is not taken care of every day, can you imagine what the Zoo would look like!”
The campaign will kick off on August 24, when hundreds of schoolchildren will be bussed to the Zoo to help clean up.
“We will talk to them about respecting themselves others and the environment – by placing their litter in a bin,” says Gaby. “We want children to take that message to their homes, schools and communities. Hopefully it will bring about some behavioural changes.”
The litter will be displayed for an extended period and a PR campaign around the cage of litter will hopefully create awareness, particularly among children, of just how appalling litter is– and how it adversely affects our environment.
“We want to create awareness among all Zoo visitors to throw their litter in the bins, or recycle when possible,” says Gaby.
