JGI SA Roots & Shoots and John Cussons from Untamed Africa have created a partnership to bring volunteers from around the world to South Africa to help with their humanitarian programmes.
We are running feeding schemes, food gardens as well as field guiding training and will soon also be introducing courses on chimpanzee management and organic farming.
John has already started a feeding scheme at the George Mhaule Primary School near White River, Mpumalanga, where 300 children are being given a supplementary nutritional milk drink each day. Dr Jane Goodall visited the children here during her recent visit, urging them to never give up on their dreams. “If you really want something, all you have to do is work hard,” she told them.
The nature guide training courses are aimed at preparing young people for positions as nature guides, and emphasise practical training. They cover everything from basic geology and ecology to advanced first aid and guiding legislation. Learners who complete the one year course are awarded the National Certificate in Tourism Guiding.
The JGI Chimpanzee Sanctuary training course is aimed at volunteers from around the world and will cover chimpanzee behaviour and the management of primate sanctuaries. All training will be done at the Sanctuary and monitored by Sanctuary Manager, Phillip Cronje.
Farming training, our newest project, will take place on a farm opposite the Kruger National Park and aims to train 100 members of the Mpumalanga community per year, enabling them to start their own small farming ventures.
