Message from JGI Executive Director - Sue Slotar

The last time Dr Jane Goodall visited us, JGI SA Chimpanzee Eden was home to two chimps, Abu and Nikki. This time, a mere 14 months later, Jane was greeted by no fewer than 17 chimps, including five new babies, rescued from Africa, Europe and the United Arab Emirates. This fantastic achievement is testimony to the unbelievable teamwork between JGI South Africa and the Cussons family. Jane had nothing but praise for the Sanctuary and the magnificent work done by MD, Eugene Cussons, and Manager, Phillip Cronje, describing Chimpanzee Eden as the best sanctuary in Africa in terms of facilities.

Our latest arrivals are five youngsters, ranging from 18 months to three years, brought here from Sudan following an arduous rescue mission by Eugene. Still in quarantine, the babes nevertheless managed to enchant the great Chimp lady through the glass windows of their quarantine quarters.

Apart from spending time at the Sanctuary meeting the new refugee chimps, Jane visited a Roots & Shoots feeding project at a nearby community school, hosted an exclusive fundraising dinner at the Lodge, and addressed a number of diverse audiences in Johannesburg.

“How is it that humans, supposedly the most sophisticated and intelligent animals of all, are destroying their world to such an extent?” was the question she posed to academics, business people and animal lovers. She stressed that every single person can make a difference to saving our planet by thinking about the impact of his or her actions.

I hope you enjoy our new newsletter format, and this bumper issue. As usual, I would welcome any feedback. Read on to find out more about Jane’s visit, our new babies and an exciting upcoming TV series.
