  JGI Newsletter - July 2008

Message from JGI Executive Director - Sue Slotar

No less than ten new chimps were rescued during June – bringing the total number of residents at Chimpanzee Eden to 30.  JGI rescue director, Eugene Cussons, rescued two females from Angola and, after a short break back at the Sanctuary, turned around to collect seven more youngsters from Sudan.  And Sanctuary manager Phillip Cronje’s perseverance finally paid off as he managed to bring 13-year-old Martha from Ghana back to JGI SA Chimpanzee Eden.

Night quarters for our wonderful third enclosure will soon be completed. Naming rights are up for grabs to anyone wishing to fund these – please see our appeal below.

A recent highlight was Dr. Jane Goodall’s brief visit.  She spoke eloquently as always of her work with the chimps and her passion for JGI Roots & Shoots at  the Johannesburg Zoo, Cape Town’s Kirstenbosch Gardens and Chimpanzee Eden in Mpumalanga.

At the other extreme, we at JGI SA are all desperately sad about the tragic death of our assistant manager at the Sanctuary, Johann Lotz.  Johann was passionate about his role and loved by all.  We will all miss him enormously, and our hearts go out to his family.

Finally, I would appeal to all non-members who receive this newsletter to please consider becoming a JGI SA member.  Membership costs a mere R250 per year and yet this means so much to our organisation. There is a link to our membership form below, or you are welcome to email me.

Kind regards,

Sue Slotar
