Improvements for Diepkloof crèche
‘An oasis in a desert of squalor’ is how Sue Slotar, JGI SA’s executive director, describes the Ekukhanyeni Crèche within the Diepkloof hostel complex in Soweto.
JGI SA is working in partnership with KDR Travel to help expand and improve this wonderful facility, originally set up with funding from the Bright Kids Foundation.
“Our first joint achievement was the addition of a Zozo hut so that the under-twos can now be separated from the other children,” says KDR Travel’s Denis Creighton. “This also gives all the children much more space.”
Thanks to a generous donation by the Howard Buffet Foundation last year, JGI SA was able to give the crèche R10 000 to cover the cost of the addition, as well as floor tiling.
JGI
and KDR Travel are also lobbying Council to give
the crèche a larger piece of ground so that the
children can spend time outside.
We will be running an appeal for educational
toys, books and good used clothing for
Ekukhanyeni from mid-February next year, so
please start collecting now.
Denis has also set up two Roots & Shoots
groups in Kliptown and Lehae, which have
achieved great success with their initial food
garden projects. Both groups now desperately
need clubhouses. If anyone can help, please
contact Denis at denis@soweto.co.za or 082
9000105.
