The big clean-up
300 learners from various Gauteng schools took part in our Litter Awareness Day at the Zoo in August. The big clean-up was organised by Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) SA volunteer, Gaby Sidley, and hosted by JGI Roots & Shoots in conjunction with Community Connect and the Johannesburg Zoo.
"The day was one way to increase awareness of the extraordinary amount of litter dumped in just one facility in one day,” says Gaby. "Littering is an enormous problem in South Africa. It does great damage to the environment, is a major socio-economic issue, is unsightly, costs a great deal of money to clean-up, is hazardous and damages infrastructure.
“Litter is everyone's business, and we need everyone in the community to be made aware so they can begin assisting us to win the battle against litter."
Thank you to Sasko and Parmalat for the donations of rolls and juice on the day.
