Message from JGI Executive Director - Sue Slotar

2008 got off to a flying start with the launch of the hugely successful ‘Escape to Chimp Eden’ series on Animal Planet in the US. It is generating great ongoing acclaim and interest in JGI SA Chimpanzee Eden. I’d like to thank the team, particularly Marcus van der Merwe, Pauline Stuart and Phillip Cronje, for all your help in responding to the masses of emails that have flooded us over the past few months. The vast majority have been hugely positive, although we have had to field some criticism as well. Read more about the series in this issue.

At the Sanctuary the new enclosure has been completed, and we hope to embark on building sleeping quarters soon. Josephine, Tony and Sampa have now all served their quarantine period, and are being introduced to their new family groups. JGI SA Chimpanzee Eden now boasts new restaurant and education facilities, and our volunteer programme has taken off.

Plans are well underway for the next two rescue missions in Angola and Sudan once Eugene returns from his second whirlwind promotional tour in the US.

Kind regards

Sue Slotar
